- Throughout all the units, we explore the 10 commandments, The Apostles’ Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, and the Sacraments.
We memorize various hymns and Bible verses related to the topics of study.
Mathematics – Saxon Math
Topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time, money, measurement (customary & metric systems), geometry, decimals, fractions, statistics & graphing, ratios, proportions, percents, and positive/negative numbers. We also practice math facts daily for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using Mastering Math Facts.
Reading – We use Reading for Christian Schools by BJU Press. The skills that we practice are phonics, character analysis, suffixes, dictionary skills, context clues, and understanding different types of text.
Spelling – We use Spelling and Vocabulary by Houghton Mifflin. The weekly word lists are grouped according to spelling patterns. There are various activities to them learn phonic comparisons of words, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms. There is also practice using a dictionary and thesaurus.
English – We use a series by A Beka. The topics covered are punctuation and capitalization rules, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, direct and indirect objects, and sentence diagramming. We also work on letter writing and constructing good paragraphs.
Social Studies – We use a history series by A Beka Book. The third grade focuses on Our American Heritage: People in U.S. History. They look at some of the people that have played an important part in America’s history such as Christopher Columbus, John Smith, George Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr., and many others.
Fourth and fifth grades are studying Old World History and Geography in Christian Perspective. They look at how the geography of the land influenced how and where people lived, as well as the important events that have shaped the history of the world.
Science – We use a series published by A Beka Book. Third grade uses Exploring God’s World. The topics of study include the five senses, plants, vertebrates, invertebrates, different habitats (desert, ocean, pond, forest, and farmer’s field), and the weather. Fourth and fifth grade uses Investigating God’s World. They explore the following topics: investigating nature, mammals, light, the Earth, the sea, energy and engines, the sky, the weather, and vertebrates. We also do various hands-on activities as well.
Health – We use the A Beka Book series. Third grade uses Health, Safety, & Manners. Topics of study include posture, exercise, nutrients, balance diet, cleanliness, fighting diseases, first aid, and the real you.
Fourth and fifth grade use Developing Good Health & Enjoying Good Health. The topics of study include the heart, food for vitality, digestive system, physical fitness, and the real you.
