Curriculum

Religion – (Grades 3 & 4) One in Christ by Concordia Publishing
God’s Word is taught daily. Students learn God’s Word and are provided with practical, engaging ideas to connect all that takes place in the classroom and extend the ideas into their daily lives. Both Old and New Testament lessons are taught.
Memory – Memory lessons are Bible verses related to the topic of study and sections of Luther’s Small Catechism.

Math – Saxon Math
The students learn to understand math so they can become problem solvers. They learn addition and subtraction, money, time and calendar, simple fractions, measurement, geomet ry, multiplication and division. Students daily practice addition and subtraction facts.

Language Arts

Grammar & Phonics – Journeys published by Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt
Students learn phonemic awareness, vocabulary strategies, and phonics and fluency.
Some of the skills taught include: prefixes, suffixes, nouns, verbs, proper nouns, homophones, final blends, syllable patterns, consonant digraphs, compound words, verb tense, punctuation, contractions, singular and plural nouns, possessives, adjectives, adverbs, and synonyms.
Reading – Journeys published by Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt
Each week students are introduced to new vocabulary words and their meanings. They read an anchor text, a paired text, and Blend-It books. The readings consist of a variety of genre such as information text, realistic fiction, fantasy, fo lkt ales, and fiction. Students learn about cause and effect, summarizing, purpose of writ ing, story struct ure, main ideas, sequence of events, and develop skills and strategies for comprehension.
Spelling – Spelling and Vocabulary by Houghton Mifflin.
We do various phonics and language arts activities that promotes real understanding of how words work. Students have a practice spelling test and a final spelling test each week.
Social Studies – My America and My World by a Beka Book.
Students learn about their community, their country, and their world. Cardinal directions and map skills are taught. Special attention is given to the people who built America: The Separatists, Native Americans, The Colonist, America’s Pioneers, America’ s Cowboys, and today’s Americans. Throughout the year we learn interesting facts and the location of each of the 50 stat es.

Science – Science 1 & 2 is a series published by BJU Press.
The curriculum has a balance between facts and active participation. With each chapter we conduct scientific experiments. Some of the content covered includes: senses, weather, seasons, tame animals, wild animals, matter, sound, solar system, plants, pushes and pulls, health and safety.

Handwriting – A Reason for Handwriting by The Concerned Group
Students daily practice their manuscript handwriting skills. When the students have successfully completed their weekly lessons, they design a project page. This page includes a Bible verse for them to share with friends and family.

Technology – Students develop mouse and keyboard skills through computer class. Students are also provided the opportunity to use the computers for educational games and research.

Music – Students participate in a variety of musical experiences including performances during chapel services, a special Christmas program and a spring musical. The students also have the opportunity to explore many genres of music using the Internet and SMARTBOARD.

Art – Many of the art activities selected correlate with lessons learned in other subjects. This cross curriculum allows the students to reinforce prior knowledge and/or learn skills in another dimension.

Physical Education – Students participate in a wide variety of activities that involve many motor skills. Our program consists of stretching, exercises, running, jump roping, gymnastics, and games. The students

About Mrs. Susan Nash
Mrs. Nash is a 2008 graduate of Winona State University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Elementary Education. Mrs. Nash completed synod certification through the colloquy program with CUENet in the fall of 2009. Prior to teaching 1st-2nd grades, Mrs. Nash taught computer and keyboarding classes at St. Johns. Before her teaching career, Mrs. Nash did daycare in her home.
